To Kill a Dragon

Oh, if only Eve had slain the serpent in the garden! Her wish, her miracle, would come true in front of her. Our land, filled with sun and seas, and apple trees so sweet, had come to be through a wish made by our very first king granted by God. For he had slain an envoy of the devil in his travels. A seven-headed dragon made this land a fiery hell on earth. But that brave king struck him down, and God had beckoned him to tell Him his wish. The humble king had only asked for the land before him to be good, so that his friends and family may rest. And now, centuries after him, stands a plentiful land, at least the parts that were not burnt to a crisp! Please, Lord, I know you do not think much of me, for I have changed so much since my departure. But you must understand, it was you, who made me learn that my place was not among people. And I do not hate you, I never would! I pray the rosary every night. I have endured your trials, so please watch over me just once more. I have seen dragons before, but they do not evoke the devil. They are creatures yearning to survive and crawl out from their mothers womb. But two nights ago, while a married woman’s hand was entwined between my chest and tunic and I sat with two men whose wrinkles ran deep into their hearts, a story was told of a seven headed king much farther east, who was feared by the lands around him. But this king had welcomed death, and offered the throne to anyone that could slay him. And Lord, I felt you ring through my heart as I learned of him. I knew that I was to partake in the same duty our ancient king had enacted so long ago! The envoy of the devil is waiting to be slain by me and God will grant me a wish. But I do not need a kingdom. I only wish to live the rest of my life free. >
